BurnTheJukebox #3

That time has come around again where I get the uncontrollable urge to get behind the decks and share what I've been hearing lately with all of you.

If you'd care to come down and hear some great music then the next BurnTheJukebox night will be from 22h00 at O Século Centro Cultural. Located at 80, Rua do Século (look out for the green tiles and the kick ass tunes).

To wet your lips here is a playlist I conceived last night to keep my wonderful girlfriend entertained at work today:

The Reindeer Section - 12 Hours It Takes Sometimes
Scout Niblett - So Much Love To Do
Adem - To Cure A Weakling Child (Boy/Girl Song) (Aphex Twin Cover)
Broken Bells - Mongrel Heart
The Gun Club - Sex Beat
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Just Like Honey
The Young Gods - Skinflowers (acoustic)
Man Man - Hurley/Burley
Altered Images - I Could Be Happy
Pavement - Date With Ikea
Sparklehorse - Shade and Honey
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Northfield, NM
Late of the Pier - Space & the Woods (Cenzo Townshend Mix)
Memory Tapes - Green Knight
Lindstrom & Prins Thomas - Boney M Down
Lou Johnson - Magic Potion
Slits - Man Next Door
Sleater-Kinney - Words and Guitar
Throwing Muses - Honeychain
Violent Femmes - Kiss Off
Folk Implosion - Nothing Gonna Stop
Husker Du - Could You Be The One?
The Soft Pack - Down On Loving
The Replacements - Seen Your Video
Tapes n Tapes - Just Drums
Fridge - Traps
Arnie Love - Invisible Wind
Passion Pit - I've Got Your Number
Studio - Origin (Shake You Down By The River)
Hot Chip - One Life Stand

Some of these might make the transition to Saturday.

I'm feeling grumpy...

It's Friday so the party feeling should be pumping through my veins right about now but instead I am in the midsts of what can only be described as a mega grump.

It has just been one of those weeks to forget (aside from the news that I will be getting a contract next year, but that was a mere distraction). It's been one of those weeks where nothing really goes to plan, all my writing this week had been a bit distracted (that's my work writing, not this) plus, in a typical fashion, our landlady has been less than helpful.

I could've probably coped a bit better if I had had some suitable distractions but there haven't been enough good new releases to keep my brain occupied. Is it the financial crisis or are people waiting for Christmas or something? Either this or I just haven't been in the kind of mood for new experiences.

I've had to resort to a few old favourites that never disappoint. There is some kind of logic to their presentation and so a big pat on the back for those of you who can follow it.

Add n to (X) - The Revenge of The Black Regent

Stereolab - French Disko

PJ Harvey - Man-Size

Shellac - Copper

The Wipers - Mystery

Love Battery - Out Of Focus

Buzzcocks - What Do I Get

Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls - Dream Sequence 1

The Only Ones - Another Girl, Another Planet

The Replacements - I Will Dare (Live)

Not bad, all a bit punky but all quite different. Nice Friday playlist.

Going back to the old school...

I've been feeling a bit restless lately and in one of those moods where all I want to hear is hip-hop. And where hip-hop is concerned it has to be old school. None of this bling wearing, gangsta rubbish.

Jurassic 5 - Quality Control

Ozomatli - Cut Chemist Suite

DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist & DJ Numark - Pushing Buttons

DJ Z-Trip - Get Down/Listen To The DJ

Friday list...

OK so it's Friday again but no ordinary Friday because it's the Friday before the second BurnTheJukebox night and my head is full of tunes to get people on the dancefloor. Here are a few of the tracks that might make an appearance:

Tom Tom Club - Genius Of Love

The Waitresses - I Know What Boys Like

The Shangri-las - Shout

Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to...

My office has just moved to a lovely new building with excellent views of the Tejo and to celebrate this there is to be a little cocktail event. I was asked to help with the music and instead of forcing my own tastes on this rather eclectic crowd I thought it better to give everyone the opportunity to choose their own music. The selections have come flooding in and strangely enough, this being a drugs agency, a good few of them were drug related.

Sadly none of them were from my favourite drug related songs:

New Order - Ecstasy
Roxy Music - Love is the Drug
Ian Dury - Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll
Placebo - Special K
The Fall - Totally Wired
Butthole Surfers - Bong Song
Redman - How To Roll A Blunt
Grandmaster Flash - White Lines
The Velvet Underground - Heroin
Spacemen 3 - Come Down Easy

Playlist #1 - Electro/House

S was out of town last night on business and while the cat's away the mice will play. This basically means that last night I had unlimited access to whatever music took my fancy and this seemed to consist of spending far too much time on the Beat Electric blog that is good for someone.

I spent a good couple of hours on there and the goodies that they have on offer have inspired me to create this playlist which was influenced by their Chicago House post and my own digging through my funky-electro from past and present:

Liquid Liquid - Cavern <- S always makes me take Liquid Liquid out of my mixes.
Ratatat - Shempi
Jungle Brothers - I'll House You
Steve Harvey - Something Special
Outlines - Listen To The Drums
Sinnamon - Thanks To You <- really excellent track
Radio 4 - Dance to the Underground <- I get this track out every couple of months
David Joseph - You Can’t Hide (Your Love From Me)
!!! - Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story)
Pylon - Volume

Here's some of the vids so you can have a listen:
