It's been a while since an album grabbed me as immediately as Beast Rest Forth Mouth by Bear In Heaven has. Even recent acclaimed albums by the likes of The xx and Girls took me a few listens to fully appreciate but here we really do have a contender for that coveted end of the year top 10 list.
Annoyingly Pitchfork got to it before me, imagine my disappointment when I opened up the site this morning and saw their review, but you will have to believe me that tracks from this album have been knocking about for a bit now and I have wanted to write about it for a while. All they did was to spur me on to post this.
It has been quite a year for bands producing electro-influenced psyche pop and this album is up there with the recent releases by The Big Pink, but with a much closer sound with layers of blissful synths providing a base for the guitars and vocals. The album could veer into dangerous territory of getting boring or repetitive but they keep it short enough so that the technique doesn't get tiresome.
(Their name is pretty crap though.)
